Cigarette Litter:

The most frequently found single item in cleanups

Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP) begins in Shelby

Keep Shelby Beautiful and the City of Shelby Public Works Department will install the first of 20 new cigarette litter receptacles in uptown Shelby on Wednesday afternoon at in front of the Shelby Café.

Cigarette Litter is the number one littered item in America by number of items. This comes from reports turned in to Keep America Beautiful (KAB) during the Great American Cleanup. KAB has been working on a national program to help target cigarette litter and help communities address this problem.

Keep Shelby Beautiful applied for and was accepted as one of several pilot programs to test the effectiveness of the program. The Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP) consists of: placement and encouragement of placement of cigarette litter receptacles at strategic “transition points”; print and electronic media public service announcements and ads; distribution of free pocket ashtrays and the encouragement of their use; and use KAB developed “scan” before and after the pilot program to assess its effectiveness.

Keep America Beautiful has supplied the Shelby program with 1000 pocket ashtrays to be given away free by area merchants and at events. Besides developing the program and distributing CD’s with program support material, they will help develop Public Service Announcements tailored to the local pilot project. The pilot project will last two to three months.

Besides the receptacles, which will be mounted on existing poles to minimize additional clutter, businesses and others are encouraged to place their own receptacles at transition points such as the entrance to a restaurant or other business. Keep Shelby Beautiful can suggest or assist with the selection of suitable receptacles.

Research shows that smokers will litter cigarette butts, lighters, matches and packaging material if an ash receptacle is not readily available. For much more information on the Cigarette Litter Prevention visit www.kab.org and look under Programs.

Keep America Beautiful’s definition of cigarette litter:

"…all cigarettes including partially smoked cigarettes and cigarette butts, lighting materials such as matches and lighters, and any cigarette packaging."
